Irene Gallou is joint head of the specialist modeling group at Foster + Partners. Her role involves assessing the impact of buildings and public spaces on the environment, leading on-site research and analysis as well as working closely with the design teams to integrate environmental design strategies at all stages. The Specialist Modeling group at Foster and Partners combines two principal areas of expertise: environmental analysis and simulation; and parametric modeling and the development of strategies for fabricating complex geometric forms. Where the two converge – as wind or solar patterns influence the geometry of a building – the design process is completely integrated.
The group’s projects range from research into building lunar habitations to the development of a new type of ceiling system.
Irene Gallou graduated from the University of Rome, “La Sapienza”, gaining a Master in Architecture in 2003. She was awarded a scholarship for experimental thesis research at the Architectural Association, focusing on the influence of urban geometry on outdoor thermal comfort and microclimatic simulation techniques. She went on to gain a masters of science from the Architectural Association in Energy and Environment. Her research focused on performance-driven façade design for office buildings. Before joining Foster + Partners, she worked for Buro Happold Consulting Engineers in London as an environmental engineer.
